The burning question of the moment is if the last of the LOTR trilogy, "The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King" will beak the $28.5 million Wednesday opening of "Star Wars: Episode One -- The Phantom Menace" from back on May 19, 1999.

"Menace" opened at 2,970 theaters that mid-week day to kick off the summer movies. "Return of the King" is opening in 3,687 theaters beginning at midnight on Tuesday, Dec. 16. [cq]

Just like it happened with "Star Wars" fans, some businesses expect a decline in employee attendance Wednesday as some of the fans of the "Lord of the Rings" sneak out to see the movie.

The prequel to "Return of the King" last year, "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" has the second place best Wednesday at $26 million, opening about the same time this year. "Matrix Revolutions" is the third place best mid-week opener at $24 mil, followed by "Jurassic Park 3" at $19 mil and "Men in Black 2" at $18.6 mil.

just by the number of theatres it's opening in gives it an advantage, although people waited a great deal longer for Ep 1 Lord of the Rings has the advantage that it not only targets fantasy, epic and dramatic moviegoers, it also targets a group that Hollywood have left outside the picture for a long time, people that read. LotR was one of the greatest Novels of all time, and the movie is doing it some justice.

I think between more theaters and increased ticket prices, it would be more of a surprise if it didn't knock off TPM.

Given the increased number of theatres and the massive and unrelenting hype around these movies, it would be a pretty sure bet to set a new record.

Being great movies also has a small part to play :D
