The STAR WARS INSIDER DIRECTORY is my attempt to create a giant table of contents for every issue of Insider, to help readers find the information they want. I was compelled to do this after Chris Solo asked about what back issues were worth picking up. When I was requesting Star Wars autographs through the mail, I kept a hand-written index of all the actor interviews. This should go well beyond that, and hopefully meet everyone’s needs.

This DIRECTORY will include all of the major features of each issue, along with some of the recurring departments that may be worthwhile to fans of Expanded Universe fiction, in-universe technical details, and customizers.

A Brief History

I’m no Fan Club historian, but here’s what I could dig up on the Star Wars Fan Club and Star Wars Insider.

The first four issues of the Official Fan Club newsletter were published by Factors. Beginning with Issue 5, it was published in-house by Lucasfilm under the title Bantha Tracks. This ran until the last issue, 35, appeared in 1987. Following soon thereafter was the officially licensed Lucasfilm Fan Club. This was renamed the Official Star Wars Fan Club in 1994, and the Lucasfilm Fan Club Magazine became Star Wars Insider with Issue 23. Until sometime in 2001, Fantastic Media published Star Wars Insider and ran the Fan Club. At that time, the license was awarded to Wizards of the Coast, a division of Hasbro. Soon thereafter, however, the torch was handed off to Paizo Publishing, the current publisher. Many of the contributing writers have been with the magazine for several years, and through all three publishers.

Recently, Star Wars Insider has brought about the return of Bantha Tracks, now a flip-side section to the Insider.

Update: In 2004 Lucasfilm regained control of the Fan Club, once again causing a change in publishers. Soon thereafter, it combined the Fan Club and Insider subscription with its existing online Hyperspace membership. While some positive changes occured, many Fan Club members voiced displeasure with the negative changes. Among theses are a drop from 8 issues per year to 6, and the membership price increase from under $30 to now $40.

Are any of the older issues worth alot of money yet? If so do you have any?

I suppose the older issues, say from the Lucasfilm Fan CLub era, have a little bit of value to them. Mainly because it was not as widely available then as it is now. I don't know any actual values. Despite some issues being harder to find, I suspect you could get any issue you want dirt cheap on ebay, if you keep watching.
