ILM has special effect on Oscars

Films that include work by San Rafael-based special effects powerhouse Industrial Light & Magic made five of seven finalist slots in the competition for three Oscar nominations, company officials said.

ILM, a branch of Marin filmmaker George Lucas' Lucasfilm Ltd., could be in line for yet another Oscar if one or more of its five films - all released during 2003 - are nominated.

The nominations, for achievement in visual effects, will be announced Jan. 27 with all the other Oscar nominations in preparation for the 76th Annual Academy Awards Feb. 29.

According to Pasternack, the ILM nomination finalists, announced by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, are: "The Hulk," "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," "Peter Pan," "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," and "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."

The other two films that made the finalist list were: "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," and "X2."

ILM, which is already at various stages of work on seven new films for release starting this summer through the end of 2005, has won 14 visual-effects Oscars since 1977 along with 16 achievement awards in either science and engineering or in technology.

The company finished the bulk of shooting for its sixth "Star Wars" film - also known as "Episode III" - last summer in Sydney, Australia. "Episode III" is scheduled for release in the summer 2005.

A year ago, Lucas reorganized his empire, consolidating what had been separate entities - the film studio, Lucas Digital, LucasArts Entertainment and Lucas Licensing - under the Lucasfilm Ltd. umbrella.

ILM remains part of Lucas Digital, which includes audio production firm Skywalker Sound. Another company, Lucasfilm Animation, was formed in May and was taken in under the Lucasfilm umbrella.
