REVIEW AND DETAILED PICTURES

By Ishi Tib

Found mainly at this time on the West Coast of the Nation, Saga Deluxe figures Wave 4 has started to hit retail. The new wave is composed of three new sculpts from Attack of the Clones, an all new Geonosian warrior with Attack Pod, a Clone Trooper with Speeder Bike and another sculpt of Anakin Skywalker accessorize this time around with a flipping base exactly as the one the previous deluxe sculpts of Dooku and Obi Wan offered.

Let's leave the best for last and, start off the review with the worst of the trio, working our way down to number one ... Wouldn't you know it? Anakin takes the number three spot on the countdown...

ANAKIN SKYWALKER
WITH FLIPPING ATTACK BASE

Not much really to talk about this figure other than it is a new sculpt of the character. The likeness still remains far from that of the actor. The hair is still light blonde, a mistake indeed, since it is not Hayden's hair color.

The new figure now sports, what I believe was meant to be, a mean, fearful face. Anakin's full set of grinding teeth can be seen while his jaw drops down; his eyes look at you without any meaning, without any expression. Taking a close look at the head sculpt makes you wonder whether he is being mean or having a serious stomach problem.

The skirt has been flared out and made of a soft plastic, allowing for the figure to be tilted to the front, something which you will actually find yourself doing in order to balance it on the base. Despite the huge magnets sticking out from under his feet, the sculpt will fall backwards if Anakin isn't posed bending forward.

Other than the new "flares" on his robes this is just a very common, very cheap looking representation of the character and there is nothing else noticeable on his design.

ARTICULATION/ACCESSORIES

Anakin shows articulating points at the neck, shoulders and right wrist which gives the hand and molded on lightsaber the ability to be placed against Dooku's, should you choose to display the figure fighting the Dark Lord. There is articulation as well at the waist and hips. The movement of the hips, although allowing for the legs to be fully rotated, is useless due to the fact the knees were sculpted sort of getting ready to kneel down, therefore trying to give the figure a more upwardly pose will only make it look silly and unnatural. He looks best and will balance better with the legs spread apart.

The flipping base the figure comes accessorize with, uses the same principle as the previous ones. Place the figure in the launching pad slots by having the magnets under the feet rest over the metal pegs on the slots, pull on the flip button and the figure will flip up in the air ... perhaps after one hundred tries you might be able to land it on his feet at the center of the base. A good pastime on a boring Saturday night :)

FLYING GEONOSIAN
WITH SONIC BLASTER AND ATTACK POD!

A totally different sculpt from the previous single carded warrior and for once, the first one to be fully dressed.

While previous sculpts lacked the availability of the covering waistline garment, the new warrior offers a harness-like "mini-skirt" with three trappings meeting its frontal corners. This new addition to the Geonosian's outfit is a separate piece from the main body mold and constructed of a soft bending plastic, allowing for the legs to be easily positioned.

There is a difference in the overall skin color of the figure. This latest version presents a lighter yellowish tone, with less green and more accented red highlights.

The upper body harness has also suffered some visual changes. For once the torso itself has been made wider, but this mainly has to do with the action feature we'll describe later on. There is a change of color from the previous dark green and gold harness to a two tone gold and red, with the red covering 75% of the piece.

A spiral necklace like decoration has also been added around the area where the articulated neck meets the body and the protecting prongs at each side of the warrior's neck have been black darken at their ends.

As far as the wings is concerned the new version offers a more intricate design. The inner and outer wings have been more realistically developed, having the feel and look of reddish veined membranes which can be moved up or down.

ARTICULATION/ACESSORIES/FEATURES

The articulation is basic: neck, shoulders and hips. The hands have been designed to hold one of the two accessories the figure is packed with; its sonic blaster.

The blaster has been modified from the original by creating a bigger gap around the trigger as well as adding a protruding handle like piece over the sonic emitter. This was done with the sole purpose to allow the figure to get a firm hold of the blaster. The left arm is bent at the elbow, making the corresponding hand get a hold of the blaster around the trigger, while the right arm has been extended, making the hand hold the blaster at the top.

The blaster offers a blue spiral "sonic" projectile which can be inserted into the blaster and fired when pushing its end. The feature works well, but it becomes a real hassle while having the figure holding the weapon as it will come off the warrior's hands due to the soft nature of the plastic used.

The second accessory and indeed very visually appealing, is the Attack Pod. Shaped remarkably simulating a hive, this accessory adds a great deal to the overall look of the set. It is vertically cut open at its center and made of a soft plastic which allows for the Geonosian warrior to be hidden within it or partially sticking out. From the back of the Pod a huge and strong suction cup comes out, giving enough support for the set to be mounted on a wall or any flat surface without the fear of it falling down. Such cup can be easily removed should one decide to place the Pod resting on a shelf.

The main feature of the figure are its flapping wings. Such action can be obtained by holding the figure at the torso while using your index finger to press the button on its back. By doing so, the wings will move back and forward recreating flight.

As a last note, due to the weight of the sonic blaster, its projectile, the weight of the wings and the soft constructed legs, the Geonosian will only remain standing by using the set of wings on its right as a supporting stand. Therefore, bring the wings on the right down as far as to touch the ground and keep the left wings up; this will balance the weight. If you fail to do so, rest assure the figure will not stand up.

CLONE TROOPER
WITH SPEEDER BIKE!

As mentioned at the beginning of the review, I wanted to leave the best for last and it is the Clone Trooper with Speeder Bike the one to take the number one spot.

The figure offers a remarkable likeness to actor Jay Laga'aia better know as Captain Typho who was in fact the one lending his face and body as the single individual the secret clone army was created from.

Offering a high grade of playability the clone trooper gives you the choice to have him displayed with or without and armor. Six of the panels on his armor suit are removable: both shoulder plates, both thigh plates, chest plate and helmet. All of these pieces can be attached to the figure fitting him snugly; nothing too big nor too loose nor too small. Noticeable is the soft plastic construction of his helmet which perfectly fits over his head without a single hassle.

With the white armor suit removed, one can easily appreciate the grade of detailed given to this figure. The pressurized black body glove shows fabric texture and both of the sleeves, at shoulder level, present the black and white clone army project emblem. On the left side of the chest the circular black and red emblem of the republic has been sculpted as well.

The figure can easily stand on its own without the use of any support but it truly looks kind of funny when displayed this way since the legs are very apart to allow for the Clone to ride the bike

The hands were design so the right one could hold on to the handle bar of the speeder while the left one could hold a weapon.

ARTICULATION/ACESSORIES/FEATURES

Quite a few points of articulation were given to this figure. Ten to be exact; they are found at: neck, shoulders, right elbow, left wrist, waist, hips and knees.

The knees are ball jointed allowing the legs to be fully rotated and permitting the Clone to actually rest his feet on the brake pedals of the vehicle

The peg jointed right elbow works in conjunction with the main action feature of the figure which is the throwing of a blue electro grenade. The grenade is placed in the Clone's right hand (such hand can also hold a blaster gun provided as part of the accessories) and the entire right arm is moved back until a clicking sound is heard. By pressing on a black button sticking out from the figure's back, the arm gets released, activating the grenade-throwing action feature. Although it is indeed protruding, the button on the Clone's back sort of blends in with the black and white color scheme of the outfit. It does not detract much from the overall look of the figure.

The articulated left hand offers a good hold when attached to the handgrip of the speeder bike. The bike, the main accessory of the set, is an overhauled version of the previous bike seen in ROTJ.

Significant changes were made to accommodate a more AOTC look of the vehicle. Such changes can be easily noticed mainly on the back of the bike right behind the seat and over the repulsor drive. Right within that area previous sculpts of the bike presented the exploding action button; the new version shows a one piece grilled panel with the Republic emblem added to the left side of the seat, while the right side presents a blast mark. The center of the repulsor drive right behind the bike is a new panel as well, with a shorter exhaust system.

The Speeder's steering levers, acceleration handgrips, guidance linkage, turbine repulsorlift, terrain sensor, directional vanes, struts, brake pedals and console and console controls have been updated to a much better more authentic look. Thus a first look might give one the impression this version of the bike is a rehash of the previous ones, when taking a close look at all the new details an improvements made, we come to realize it is truly a new sculpt of the vehicle.

Thanks CoruscantCosta on your comment 'bout the pics..
As far as the Anakin..heck yeah! another $10.00 waste but I guess we need him if we want them all.

Lame is a very soft word to describe how I feel about this figure but I guess like Mick Jagger says: " You can't always get what you want"

And as far as the face sculpt is concerned..yup..I did notice the stomach problem situation..poor guy! :D
