Dark Lord of the Typos
Today we continue our spotlight on Star Wars postage stamps. We have three different sheets of Star Wars stamps from Togo. A separate sheet was produced for each movie. The A New Hope sheet features one large 2000 franc stamp. The Empire Strikes Back sheet has 350 franc stamps, and features a very creative and colorful painting. The TIE Bombers rocketing skyward are reminiscent of a Star Trek movie poster. Lastly, the Return of the Jedi stamps are denominated 190 francs. This sheet captures a wide variety of characters and vehicles, including Royal Guards, the Rancor, speeder bikes, and Ewoks.
The Togo stamps were all released in 1997, and were of course valid postage in their country of origin. They were designed more as a money-making venture, and could be purchased through stamp collecting societies, and even newspaper advertisements. These were all a gift from a friend, who obtained them through the International Collectors Society, who issued a certificate of authenticity to send out with each sheet.
