When we first saw pictures of the Jedi Starfighter way back, many keen-eyed fans noticed that little symbol on the ship that represents the Republic. Some people were a little confused about why it looked so much like the Empire's logo from the original trilogy. Well, if you think about it, the Empire is born out of the failed Republic, so it makes perfect sense.
Starwars.com addressed the issue, albeit vaguely saying that the symbol is in fact derived from the Galactic Empire symbol. I have a little more info on this that I'll share with you. You won't see or hear about this in the film at all but there's a little story behind this ancient icon.
