Star Wars Live-Action TV Series, More to Launch on Disney Streaming Service
Disney's new streaming service is giving us a Star Wars live-action series and more

We're getting a Star Wars live-action TV series from the upcoming Disney streaming service. Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO Bob Iger spoke about the project during a quarterly earnings call with investors on Thursday. The streaming service will launch in 2019. In addition to the Star Wars live-action series, Iger said that we're also be getting a TV series based on the 2001 Pixar film Monster, Inc. as well as one based on the Disney Channel film franchise High School Musical. This is in addition to the news that Rian Johnson will be creating a new trilogy for the Star Wars franchise. Johnson is the director of the upcoming film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He will write and direct the first of the trilogy's films.

The new Disney-branded service will become the exclusive home in the U.S. for subscription-video-on-demand viewing of the newest live action and animated movies from Disney and Pixar, beginning with the 2019 theatrical slate, which includes Toy Story 4, the sequel to Frozen, and The Lion King from Disney live-action, along with other highly-anticipated movies. Disney will also make a significant investment in an annual slate of original movies, TV shows, short-form content and other Disney-branded exclusives for the service. Additionally, the service will feature a vast collection of library content, including Disney and Pixar movies and Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD television programming. All told, around 500 films from the Disney library will be present on the service along with nearly 7,000 episodes of Disney television.

A tiny bit of detail about the new live-action TV series ...

‘Star Wars’: Jon Favreau Reveals TV Series Details
Creator Jon Favreau revealed the first details of his forthcoming “Star Wars” streaming TV series.

In a post Wednesday on his Instagram account, the filmmaker teased “The Mandalorian,” writing in a yellow-on-black script reminiscent of the traditional opening “crawl” that precedes most “Star Wars” films, “After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.”

The Walt Disney Co. announced in March that Favreau would write a live-action “Star Wars” series for the company’s forthcoming streaming service, which is set to launch next year. The project would become the first live-action television series set in the “Star Wars” universe.

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Favreau’s live-action series entry into to “Star Wars” universe on a conference call with investors in March. The show is set to become one of multiple series and film offerings hailing from Disney’s Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar units that will populate the new service as Disney looks to challenge dominant player Netflix in the direct-to-consumer arena.

The names of the directors for new show have been released ...
The directors for the series have been officially announced included Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) who will be directing the first episode. Additional episodes will be directed by Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). The Mandalorian will be executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer.

Also released is the first photo ... which, rather surprisingly for a show named The Mandalorian, depicts someone wearing Mandalorian armour. ;)

Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced today that Lucasfilm is in development on a second Star Wars live-action series for Disney+, the Company's new direct-to-consumer streaming service.

The series, which will go into production next year, follows the adventures of rebel spy Cassian Andor during the formative years of the Rebellion and prior to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
