There are 2 different ranking systems.
1) You are ranked by the number of posts that you make. The starting position is "informer" and once you hit 20 posts, you're a "spy". However, once you have 10 posts, you can change your title/rank to whatever you want. See my post about this in the New Members forum. If you choose, you may certainly leave your title alone and earn the new "ranks" (I would rather not have people posting just for this reason though).
2) You are ranked based on trades. When you make good trades the number of green stars in your postbit increases. You can view the announcement in any trading forum for more details about this.
