Planet Hulk and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
This weekend I watched Planet Hulk and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Both were quite good. Both animated movies are based on comic book story arcs of the same names, which I have not read.
Planet Hulk involves Hulk being forcibly sent to an alien planet where he can live in peace and solitude with no one around to hurt. Things go awry however, and he lands on a different planet entirely where he is sold into slavery as a gladiator. This is a comic I've been wanting to read for a long time. The movie is pretty decent...although I suspect the comic is better. One aspect I missed was the presence of Silver Surfer, one of my favorite comic characters. He was apparently also tapped on this planet in the comics. However, the cartoon uses Beta Ray Bill (I'm assuming) in place of the Surfer. This is probably because the Surfer/Fantastic Four rights are tied up with a different company. At the beginning, Reed Richards should be one of the peopl einvolved in sending Hulk away. There is a character who resembles Reed, but he is kept in the shadows so you can't make out who he clearly is. Anyway, I recommend renting this, if not buying it.
Public Enemies packs a little bit more of a punch as far as movies go. Maybe it's because they use many familiar characters and established voice artists for them. This one revolves around Lex Luthor becoming President of the United States, where "super-heroes" must eventually become government agents or face becoming outlaws. In the face of a crisis, Superman and Batman become just this. Excellent story even if you haven't followed previous Justice League series.
Anyone else seen these?
