Asked to name Hollywood's top box-office stars, most people could come up with names like Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and Bruce Willis.
«
How many of you would think of Jim Cummings, whose movies rank him No. 1 all-time in box-office receipts? A Web site called The Numbers (the- numbers.com) created the rankings, which show Cummings' 25 films have grossed $2.2 billion, about $89 million per film.
«
Yet you've probably never heard of him. Or seen him.
«
Cummings is a voice actor whose credits include two of the biggest hits ever, Shrek ($268 million) and The Lion King ($313 million). He got his start in Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 1988, voicing several characters, including "additional weasels." Since then, he's been in just about every animated feature made, with the notable exception of the Pixar/Disney films, such as Finding Nemo.
«
Cummings isn't the only surprise on The Numbers' "All Time 100 Top Stars at the Box Office," created by Bruce Nash of San Francisco.
«
To call everyone on the list a "star" is a misnomer, however. A star is a box-office attraction, and let's face it, as good as Cummings is, he's not the attraction.
«
Another unlikely "star" is John Ratzenberger, best known as Cliff the postman on TV's Cheers. You may think his career has been pretty much a zilch otherwise, but you would be overlooking his voice contributions to Toy Story, Monsters, Inc. and other big hits from Pixar/Disney.
«
The Numbers ranks its stars according to the total amount earned by their movies, not by the average amount, which would vault Anthony Daniels into the No. 1 spot, with $359 million per picture. No. 2 would be Kenny Baker ($196 million). Who are they? C-3PO and R2-D2, respectively, in the Star Wars movies.
«
Notwithstanding these anomalies, the list mostly conforms to expectations: Harrison Ford is No. 1 with $3.26 billion, followed by Samuel L. Jackson ($2.96 billion), Tom Hanks ($2.81 billion) and Tom Cruise ($2.44 billion). Then, Eddie Murphy, James Earl Jones, Bruce Willis and Mel Gibson.
«
The highest-ranked woman is Julia Roberts at No. 21 ($1.89 billion, averaging $70 million). Carrie Fisher is next, thanks to Star Wars. Whoopi Goldberg is No. 28, Kathy Bates No. 41.
