That's what earned Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) the top AFI honor, revealed Tuesday night in a network telecast. Finch is the lawyer who battles racism in the South from Harper Lee's classic novel-turned-film "To Kill a Mockingbird."

Not surprisingly, Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) from "Silence of the Lambs" and two subsequent films was named the top villain.

Dubbed the "100 Years, 100 Heroes and Villains" list, the AFI celebrated the picks for the top 50 heroes and top 50 villains in American cinematic history.

Rounding out the top five heroes were Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) from "Raiders of the Lost Ark," James Bond (Sean Connery, et al) from the 007 film series, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) from "Casablanca" and Will Kane (Gary Cooper) from "High Noon."

Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) was the runner-up in the villains race, followed by Darth Vader (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones) from the original "Star Wars" trilogy, the Wicked Witch of the West (Margaret Hamilton) from "The Wizard of Oz" and Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher), "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."
