Over the weekend, I’ve had a mighty interesting experience. Thanks to a friend in the industry, I’ve had the opportunity to revisit Star Wars on Blu-ray as I first experienced it many years ago – unaltered, in 720p high-definition, and with the original audio mixes. As some of you may know, I’m speaking of Harmy’s infamous “despecialized” edition of Star Wars – the most recent 2.5 version (early 1.0 versions of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are available online too ...

"despecialized"?!?
If that means actually removing the Special Edition alterations, then that would be seriously difficult, if not impossible, in some scenes ... unless you simply cut out the entire scene and replace it with one from the original VHS / laserdisc / DVD versions, which would likely be jarring and horrible to watch.

I'm not particularly interested in the 'despecialized' version the guy at Digital Bits watched. I'm more interested in the blu-ray he was speculating about.

What I'd like is a version of the movies that is close to how I first saw them. It's ok if there are subtle improvements. I'm not a fan of jarring changes. For instance, it's cool to get an extended establishing shot of Mos Eisley. It's not cool to add a bunch of 'cutesy' extra action like jawas falling off mounts, etc. Meanwhile, Vader and his two fighter escorts at the end of ANH still look like they're mounted to the same rig and move in perfect unison (fix that). Basically, I'd like for them to enhance the movie that I know instead of adding in a bunch of new, extra stuff (CG Jabba in Mos Eisley, etc).

We all know you want Jar Jar's face to appear in every scene of all nine movies ... Where's Wally / Waldo style. ;)

Jar Jar is a perfect example of something that's made me more accepting of Ewoks. Oh, what a slippery slope it is indeed.

Ewoks never really bothered me at the time ... although, in retrospect, it is a bit silly that they contributed so much the the fall of the empire. I wouldn't change them in Jedi.
