As many fans know, the Japanese movie The Hidden Fortress is considered one of the main places that George Lucas used for inspiration for Star Wars, and now Japan is jumping on the "remake bandwagon". From Australia's Empire Online ...

Star Wars to be Remade!
Well, not quite...

Steady on there, Lucas fans, the heading may be a little misleading. It should read, one of the films that influenced Star Wars is to be remade. But, hey, that doesn't make for a very snappy headline. Moving on...

According to a story in The Hollywood Reporter, Japanese film studio Toho is to remake Akira Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress, to be directed by Shinji Higuchi, who last year made The Sinking Of Japan.

The 1958 classic action comedy starred Toshiro Mifune, whose place will be taken by Japanese rom-com star Hiroshi Abe, while Masami Nagasawa will take the role of Princess Uehara.

In a surprising break away from the original, the parts of two peasant refugees, who inspired R2-D2 and C-3PO, will be combined into one single character, Takezo, from whose perspective the story will be told.

Shooting is scheduled to begin early next month, with a tentative May 10 release date.
