Next-gen, open-world Star Wars game spotted
Superannuation feels a disturbance in the Force.

A next-generation, open-world Star Wars game is in development at EA Canada, indicates a new job listing.

Superannuation points to a job listing posted last month for an animation director on EA Canada's Star Wars team. According to the listing, the team is working on "a major new next gen open world action game."

EA Visceral is also understood to be working on a Star Wars game. As the EA Canada listing wants someone with expertise in "multi-site development", it's possible the two projects are one in the same.

Battlefield developer EA DICE is also working on a new Star Wars: Battlefront game at its new Los Angeles studio.

EA signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Disney to develop Star Wars games in May.

Under the agreement, EA will develop and publish new Star Wars titles for a core gaming audience "spanning all interactive platforms and the most popular game genres", while Disney will retain certain rights to develop new titles within the mobile, social, tablet, and online game categories.

Disney acquired Star Wars studio Lucasfilm in 2012 and shut down its game development subsidiary LucasArts April.

EA's reputation right now isn't worth dirt. While I'm interested in any new Star Wars games, there's a tendency for most developers to bank on the Star Wars name and not really deliver an original idea. With EA screwing up almost everything they touch these days, that doesn't bode well.
