New Star Wars spin-off movies

Disney and LucasFilm have confirmed that they will be making other spin-off movies (as well as the third Trilogy) about some of the Star Wars characters. The rumour is that Yoda is first up to get his own movie. This is from ComingSoon.net ...

Disney Confirms Stand-Alone Star Wars Films
Walt Disney Pictures Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has confirmed rumors that the studio is looking at a series of Star Wars films that will see release independent of the new trilogy and that will focus on specific characters from the overall Star Wars universe.

"There has been speculation about some stand-alone films that are in development," Iger tells CNBC. "I can confirm to you today that, in fact, we are working on a few stand-alone films. Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great 'Star Wars' characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Episodes 7, 8, and 9, roughly over a six-year period of time, starting in 2015. There are going to be a few other films released in that time, too."

Iger goes on to say that Kasdan and Kingberg are serving in a consulting capacity on J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII with Michael Arndt supplying the screenplay. Both writers are simultaneously working on new, as of yet unknown, Star Wars films.

The news arrives on the heels of yesterday's rumor that claimed the first such film would follow the adventures of Yoda. While that rumor has not been confirmed, Iger's comments suggest some truth to the reports.

I'm more interested in the stand alone movies right now. They will play the same havoc with EU continuity, but I think will allow a little more freedom of storytelling. Current reports at Boba Fett and (young) Han Solo tales.

I'd almost prefer new characters or different eras, but again....should be pretty neat to see.

Yep. The "EU" (Expanded Universe) is likely to quickly become the "AU" (Alternate Universe) :( ... or perhaps the new movies will simply become the "eeeewwwwww!!!". ;)

Boba Fett of course has had his backstory already changed once wiht the arrival of the Prequel Trilogy.

For young India... err, Han Solo, they could always get Shia Le Beouff or Sean Patrick Flannery to play the role. ;)

This is where is seems like they could just adapt some old books. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Han_Solo_Trilogy .... I'm pretty sure I've read these books, but I've probably completely forgotten the plot. I doubt they would do that though.

I hope they don't go too young with these characters. And I hope they don't overestimate how interesting some of these back-stories really are.

Something involving Jabba and the criminal underground side of things (with no Jedi or Sith) could be interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tales_from_Jabba's_Palace

Something with Lando, Solo and Chewbacca that involves the Falcon changing hands could be interesting.

The Darth Plagueis story that Palpatine tells in Episode III might be something interesting to expand on.

There is actually a Darth Plagueis book that came out last year, I believe. It is supposed to be pretty awesome. It details Plagueis and Sidious, maybe some Maul too. Waiting to get it in softcover...which should be out soon if not already.

Yeah, there are quite a few good books (and comics) out there that would adapt well. I'd be surprised if they adapted any.

The UK paperback version of Darth Plagueis was due for release on 7 February ... I ordered it from BookDepository.co.uk earlier this week along with a few other books. :)

My paperback copy of Plagueis arrived this week, along with Conviction, Ascension, and Revan (and a couple of non-Star Wars books). Plagueis does have a picture of Darth Maul on the back cover and a quick flick through sees the name mentioned - the book is set about 35 years before Episode I, so it must be quite a young Darth Maul.

With about Star Wars 150 novels released so far and piling up (and likely to be lots more with Disney's plans), I might have to start actually reading some of them. :)
