Legendary US film director George Lucas, creator of the "Star Wars" saga, announced Tuesday his production house will set up its first animation studio outside of the United States in Singapore.

In a joint venture with the Singapore government and local tech firm Creative Technology, Lucasfilm will produce digital animated content for films, television and games aimed at the global audience.

Singapore was picked for Lucasfilm's first expansion outside of the United States mainly because of its strong legal system that protects intellectual property rights.

Singapore's pro-business environment, friendly immigration policies and the widespread use of the English language in commerce as other factors that put the city-state ahead of other locations.

The decision by Lucasfilm, which is based in California and founded its animation division in 2003, to select Singapore is a big boost for the city-state's ambitions of becoming an Asian media hub.

Some of the world's biggest broadcasters, including ESPN, MTV and HBO have their Asian bases in Singapore.
